Climate change is real...
And we are part of the solution
The evidence of global climate change’s impacts is overwhelming and society and policies are changing rapidly to address this worldwide challenge. Moving to a low-carbon electric grid over the next decade is one of the major strategies for addressing this issue. Southwest Generation takes seriously its role within the electric system and is committed to being a positive force as our electric grid evolves to meet our environmental challenges.
Southwest Generation employs a strategy of improving operational efficiency, reducing costs and increasing the overall value of power generation assets. Our clean, efficient gas-fired generation assets are flexible and responsive to the integration of wind and solar generation resources, providing reliable regulation for renewable technologies.
In the near term--
We are part of the solution
Our technology makes it possible to retire coal now and affordably replace it quickly with a combination of gas and renewables – which in turns leads to rapid grid decarbonization. In the last 10 years, carbon emissions from the power sector have been reduced by 26%, mostly due to natural gas.
In the Long Term
Working towards a zero-carbon future
While the technologies do not yet exist to bring our system to zero carbon, it’s imperative to develop these solutions as soon as possible. In addition to grid-scale battery storage (which is already proving itself), technologies like hydrogen, carbon capture, and biofuels have a role to play. At Southwest Generation, our goal is to be part of the next generation of technical solutions that will ultimately provide the electrical system with reliable, dispatchable, zero-carbon generation.
“Southwest Generation is a world leader in the transition to a low-carbon electrical system. In the short term, their technology allows for rapid retirement of high emission resources and seamless integration of zero-emission resources, which is critical to meeting our near-term climate goals. And in the long term, they are researching and developing the next generation of clean power technologies – technologies that will move our system into a new era.”
